politique."
Nicolas De Warren (Wellesley College)

The problem of ethics can broadly be framed as the problem of shaping
oneself in the consciousness that one is not alone. In this seminar, we
shall draw on different philosophical sources in order to develop an
account of the intersection between the imagination and ethics, understood
here as the possibility of the meaningfulness of a life other than my own.
We shall begin our inquiry with accounts of the constitutive function of
the imagination for the formation of a moral self in Hume, Lord Kames, and
Shaftesbury. We then attempt to provide a phenomenological re-statement of
this connection between morality and the imagination in relation to the
writings of Husserl and Sartre. On the basis of this phenomenological
account of the exercise of the imagination in the formation of a moral
life, we expand the scope of our discussion to include specific themes:
the constitution of imaginary friends; the nature of friendship; the
suffering of others, including animals; the formation of virtual or
"cyber" lives; moral imagination in literature; the constitution of
enemies.
